RESOLUTION SUPPORTING
UNITED STATES SPACE & ROCKET CENTER
SPACE CAMP AND AVIATION CHALLENGE PROGRAMS
WHEREAS, the United States SPACE CAMP was established in 1982, and thereafter, SPACE ACADEMY and ADVANCED SPACE ACADEMY, and having been to include students ages 8 through 18; and
WHEREAS, AVIATION CHALLENGE was established in 1990, and having been expanded to include students ages 8 through 18; and
WHEREAS, the SPACE CAMP, SPACE ACADEMY, ADVANCED SPACE ACADEMY, and AVIATION CHALLENGE programs provide unique and equitable learning experiences in space and aviation science and science in general; and
WHEREAS, these experiences are frequently "hands on" in nature; and
WHEREAS, the activities and programs strengthen learning skills in other academic disciplines and encourage study in math, science, computer science; and
WHEREAS, students benefit from instruction by renowned scientists, engineers, and experts in their fields and curriculum/program activities developed by certified instructors; and
WHEREAS, the United States Space & Rocket Center provides validated educational programs for the visually impaired, hearing impaired, special needs, and underprivileged youth; and
WHEREAS, the United States Space & Rocket Center encourages collaborative partnerships among government, industry, and educational elements in the public and private sector to promote scientific literacy and competencies; and
WHEREAS, a team of State Department of Education specialists has reviewed the programs in action along with the facilities, materials, equipment, and publications used in the programs;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education recognizes SPACE CAMP, SPACE ACADEMY, ADVANCED SPACE ACADEMY, and AVIATION CHALLENGE programs as academically sound experiences for school students; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That local education agencies consider awarding professional development credit to teachers participating in activities related to SPACE CAMP, SPACE ACADEMY, ADVANCED SPACE ACADEMY and AVIATION CHALLENGE programs.
